Phallologocentrism and Queer Musicology

Do you have kids in college? Do you know what they are learning? Take a look and you might be appalled.

Southern California seems to have assumed the mantle of the politically correct nonsense curriculum, formerly the domain of the Ivy Leagues, with courses in “The Phallus” (Occidental College -- examines phallologocentrism and the lesbian phallus, the Jewish phallus, the Latino phallus) and “Queer Musicology” (UCLA -- an “unruly discourse explores how sexual difference and complex gender identities among musicians have incited productive consternation”) understood through the works of Cole Porter, Holly Near and Pussy Tourette.

The Young America’s Foundation (see pic above) has published “The Dirty Dozen: America’s Most Bizarre and Politically Correct College Courses.” The Occidental and UCLA courses mentioned above took the top two spots on the infamous list demonstrating that “professors still have an obsession with dividing people on the basis of their skin color, sexuality, and gender.” The Dirty Dozen are the “most bizarre and troubling instances of leftist activism supplanting traditional scholarship.”

Occidental College makes the list twice with “Blackness,” which elaborates on a “new blackness, critical blackness, post-blackness, and an unforgivable blackness,” which all combine to create a “feminist New Black Man.” This must be one lonely fellow.

In case you feel that blacks are being picked on at Oxy, never fear as there is also a course in “Whiteness” that examines “the construction of whiteness in the historic, legal and economic contexts which have allowed it to function as an enabling condition for privilege and race-based prejudice.” A passing grade in “Whiteness” is a prerequisite for taking “Blackness,” which is clearly a higher level course.

Even the Shakespeare course at Occidental focuses on “cultural anxieties over authority, race, colonialism and religion.”

Not to be outdone by the left coast, the Elite East offers “Taking Marx Seriously: Should Marx be given another chance?” (Amherst College -- inquires “if societies can gain new insights by returning to Marx’s texts.”) Students learn that Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot merely misapplied the concepts of Marxism and it deserves to be rescued from the “ash heap of history.”

In “The Adultery Novel” (U. Pennsylvania -- read adultery novels and watch adultery films) students learn to “place adultery into its aesthetic, social and cultural context, including: sociological descriptions of modernity, Marxist examinations of family as a social and economic institution and feminist work on the construction of gender.” They really like Marx and feminism.

Duke’s history course “American Dreams/American Realities” seeks to unearth “such myths as rags to riches, beacon to the world, and the frontier in defining the American character.” So much for the vision of America as “a city on a hill.” It’s the death of patriotism.

Charlotte Allen an editor at Beliefnet notes that “American higher education has lost any notion of what its students ought to know about the ideas and people and movements that created the civilization in which they live: Who Plato was or what happened at Appomattox.”

Occidental professor Jeffrey Tobin (“The Phallus”) reports that his course is sold out and there is a long waiting list.

How many Americans can name more than one of the five freedoms protected by the First Amendment? (25%) How many can name at least two family members of “The Simpsons.” (over 50%) The Washington Post reports that only 31% of college grads could read and comprehend complex books, while The Chronicle of Higher Education reports that 40% of college students need remedial work in math and English.

But the vast majority of college grads are indoctrinated in political correctness and a whole variety of nonsense - “isms.” We need to put our educational resources to better use!

Hey Bill:
Hope you are having a stellar new year! This type of garbage makes my blood boil. I have no issue with people studying various cultures, but this is taking things to a quite disgusting level. I was at SFSU when they first started offering a course in Whiteness studies. A Japanese woman was teaching the course. That is all I will say about that wretched nonsense!

What the hell is our society coming to? I tutor these kids in math and they are being taught about isometries and transformations in Geometry, but they don't know what the hell symmetry is! Talk about a bloody and screwed up educational system. The text books are all written by people with attention deficit disorder, so kids see buzz words and have little understanding of these concepts.

Ooops I am rambling. I guess you struck a nerve;) hehehhehe Have a great rest of week!

That's what you get for sending them to a liberal arts college. In engineering colleges, they don't have the time or inclination for such nonsense.

On the subject of reinstating Marxism, I'd recommend that people re-read the works of Max Eastman. Max was a booster of the October Revolution, a friend of Leon Trotsky, and acquainted with the other top Bolsheviks. But being closer to the Communists, he became disillusioned with them sooner than other Americans. When Franklin Roosevelt couldn't do enough to help Uncle Joe Stalin, Max was warning "Watch out for these guys - they'll double-cross you every time." He predicted that any Marxist government, no matter how well intentioned at first, would eventually devolve into absolute dictatorship. And of course, they all did.

When I knew Max in his later years, he was a roving editor for the Reader's Digest, about as opposite from Marxism as you can get.

This is bullshit!! These courses are a waste of time and money and the effort of the professor to, supposedly, research them!

Dear Bill,
No kidding. Who hires these freaks? Besides, these courses are typically, at best, ill-conceived tokens to academic freedumb and, at worst, even worse! Ironically, they often are downright persecutory towards students who are not in compliance with their prejudices. For example, I'll bet that Testosterone taught me more about coeducational Phallologocentrism than a Queer Musicology Professor would ever give me credits for.

Proposals for such courses should have to be approved by a committee of you and me - you know, two open-minded Centerists. :) We'd shred their applications faster than they could explain what would constitute rigor in their proposed necrophilia course.

Hey Dad. Your favorite son here, reading your blog from the one Internet cafe in Vallanad, India. (Don't bother trying to find this village on the map.)

Your post reminds me of the first class I chose as a freshman at the University of Rochester. After four years of the all-male McQuaid Jesuit High School, I was anxious to mix with some females. The class that seemed the most likely to be filled with women was "Philisophical Foundations of Feminism".

Well, the first day outside the classroom I noticed that the women walking in were more into short hair and hiking boots than sorrority sweaters. Then I walked into the room, and the only two other men there were also from McQuaid! Ha!!

Pussy Tourette??? Well, I learn something new every day. ;-)

Pussy Tourette is the stage name for an American drag queen, composer and singer.

She is best known for her single French Bitch, for which a music video/short film was made and included in the film festival compilation DVD Boys' Shorts: The New Queer Cinema. The song is a comedic, high camp dance track about the duplicitous title character who "saw my man, so she felt the need to scratch her itch".

What's wrong Einstein? Now you won't even sign as Einstein?

Of course you won't give your real name. That's because you are a COWARD.

I wanted you to meet my son because he is the one you ridiculed. No threat. And don't even think about threatening me.

You offer only "sarcasm"...your word... and expect me to respect you.

Please don't come back. Anything you write will be deleted.

From the American Midwest, I find this type of liberal crap taught on campus today to be unacceptable. Too many of our American citizens know little about civics, our judicial process, or even basic math and science. But, we'd rather have our universities type our kids this stuff? Not me. I am an old fashioned type with a degree in physics (not from Berkeley) and a MBA. You will find my son entering college in pre-med.
There's too much spin out there--we have liberal democrats call people "undocumented workers" when we fail to actually call them the correct term: ILLEGAL aliens. And why are they undocumented? Because they cannot get papers since they are here illegally. I would get arrested if I broke the law----this is a country that is suppossed to be about equality. So, I say, let's arrest them for BREAKING THE LAW.
